Human dignity consists in the capacity and task to open oneself to God’s self-communication. This pre-established dignity can never be lost although it can be denied. We only come to know our nature and God slowly. 4. Achieving our nature is the goal of our freedom and our salvation. 5. The dignity of human nature contains these mutually determining moments: a) Our natural (personal) being which is: i) Spirit, always dependent on God, the total unity of reality; ii) Freedom; iii) Individual, unique, undeduced, immortal subject of an eternal destiny; iv) Communitybuilding: perfect to the extent we open ourselves in love to serve others; v) Incarnate and mundane: self-realization comes only in extending oneself in space and time.
God freely chooses to communicate himself to us as a choice. Only because we have this choice is our freedom liberated from the bondage of finitude. God is the freedom of our freedom. Summary (94). God’s free offer of self-communication is the decisive factor of the human situation. This alone makes humanity one community—a community of freedom lost in Adam (original sin) and of freedom regained in Christ (redemption).
